I haven't actually disabled it software-wise, but I think it would have effected the USB mouse as well if it had been a problem with the center-keyboard mouse.Īs of yet, the USB mouse is still working great, so I am assuming this is hardware, however I am trying everything else before I spend any money (especially since I have to format & reload the laptop anyways). On all of these, we have taken the little center-keyboard mouse out. I am hoping this will help with the problem, but if not, I'll install drivers and, if that fails, replace the - Most of our users (including the one who had this laptop) have had the problem of typing and accidentally hitting the little mouse in the middle of the keyboard. The problem should be a massive embarrasement to Dell, but I'm not sure they feel it's a large issue - though it should be on a $2500 mobile - The laptop did have XP on it and I am now upgrading it to Vista, as I do not have the budget yet to upgrade all our PC's to 7. So basically, what I'm posting here might not be a solution but can at least let you know what we found. The problem appears to go away virtually completely in Windows 7, but I've seen videos on YouTube of the next generation XT3 systems that have the problem running Win 7. The only work around that we ever found to work at all was to plug in a mouse, but that was not always possible. We even sent one of our systems to their lab to be observed for over a month and they had no conclusive explanation for the behavior as they said the could not reproduce the issue consistantly did I buy that? No. It got so bad that the end users could simply not use the system. We have also noticed that heat seems to be a big factor as when the system temperature is "normal" to "above normal" the condition appeared more frequently. They also had us follow driver updates and install their N-Trig driver set, which did not correct anything. This seemed to fix the problem, but not necessarily for good and not every time. We sent units to the Dell Depot and also had several techs out to replace mobo's, the tablet screens and the touchpad elements on several of the systems. We purchased a number of them four years ago when they first released and fought the jumping cursor problem consistantly for the longest time. We have a LOOOONG history with this problem and (mainly) Dell XT2 systems running Win XP.
